The Story of Prophet Idris

The Story of Prophet Idris (AS), the Ascended Prophet: Lessons on Knowledge, Righteousness, and His High Station in Islam.

Among the revered prophets of Allah is Idris (alayhis salam), a figure of great wisdom, knowledge, and piety. Though mentioned only twice by name in the Quran, his story is filled with honor and profound lessons. He is remembered as a man of truth and patience whom Allah elevated to a uniquely "high station."

A Prophet of Wisdom and Firsts

Prophet Idris (AS) is a descendant of Prophet Seth, the son of Adam, making him one of the earliest prophets. Many scholars identify him with the biblical figure Enoch. He was sent to the descendants of Cain, the son of Adam, who had strayed into corruption and sin. Idris (AS) called them back to the worship of the One True God, teaching them about piety, justice, and the hereafter.

His era was marked by pioneering advancements for humanity. Islamic tradition holds that Idris (AS) was the **first person to write with a pen**, the first to sew and wear tailored garments (as people before him wore animal skins), and the first to study the stars (astronomy), understanding their movements as signs of Allah's magnificent creation.

💡 The Pen as a Symbol of Knowledge:

The act of writing, introduced by Idris (AS), represents a monumental leap for civilization. It allowed knowledge to be recorded, preserved, and passed down through generations, emphasizing Islam's deep respect for learning, reading, and intellectual pursuit.

A Man of Truth and Patience

The Quran praises the character of Idris (AS) in Surah Maryam, highlighting his core virtues. This divine praise is a testament to his exemplary life and steadfastness.

"And mention in the Book, Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth [and] a prophet. And We raised him to a high station."
(Quran 19:56-57)

In another chapter, he is mentioned among the patient ones, a quality essential for all prophets who face rejection and hardship from their people. His life was one of constant worship, reflection, and teaching, earning him this special recognition from Allah.

The Ascension to a High Station

The phrase "And We raised him to a high station" has been a subject of scholarly reflection. While it certainly refers to the high spiritual rank and honor he holds with Allah, many narrations, including one attributed to Ibn Abbas (RA), provide a more literal account of this ascension.

The story narrates that Prophet Idris (AS) had a close relationship with an angel who would visit him. Idris asked the angel to take him to see the Angel of Death, as the thought of death made him worship with even greater intensity. The angel carried him to the fourth heaven, where they met the Angel of Death, who was descending.

The Angel of Death was surprised to see Idris there, explaining that Allah had commanded him to take the soul of Idris in the fourth heaven, and he had been puzzled as to how that would happen. In that very place, the soul of Prophet Idris (AS) was taken, and he was honored by Allah to remain in the heavens. This event is also referenced in the story of the Mi'raj (Night Journey), where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) met Prophet Idris (AS) in the fourth heaven.

Timeless Lessons from Idris's Story

Lesson 1: Knowledge is a Form of Worship.

The skills attributed to Idris (AS)—writing, tailoring, astronomy—were not just worldly crafts. They were used to better humanity and understand Allah's creation. This teaches us that seeking beneficial knowledge and mastering skills to improve life is a virtuous and rewarded act in Islam.

Lesson 2: Righteousness and Patience Elevate a Person's Rank.

Allah did not praise Idris (AS) for wealth or power, but for being a "man of truth" and for his patience. His high station was a direct result of his unwavering piety and perseverance. This reminds us that true honor in the sight of Allah comes from character, not worldly status.

Lesson 3: Reflecting on Death Increases Devotion.

Prophet Idris's keen awareness of death did not lead him to despair, but rather motivated him to increase his acts of worship. This is a powerful lesson for believers to remember death often, not to become morbid, but to live a more purposeful and God-conscious life.

Lesson 4: Allah's Plan is Perfect and Precise.

The meeting with the Angel of Death in the exact location foretold by Allah shows that every detail of our lives, including the time and place of our death, is perfectly decreed. This should instill in us a sense of trust (Tawakkul) in Allah's divine plan.
